Only record seen so far is mention of a theft from the George Inn before the fire of 1683 in Peter May's book "Changing face of Newmarket 1600-1760". This is possibly the theft recorded in the London Gazette ",...before the fire, from the "George Inn", in Newmarket, a flea bitten grey pad nag with a bob tail, about 13 hands and a half high, eight years old."
It could be that this went on to become the "George & Dragon", there has been found no trace of its location
